The MacBook Pro (sometimes unofficially abbreviated as MBP) is a line of Macintosh portable computers introduced in January 2006, by Apple Inc. It is the higher-end model of the MacBook family, sitting above the consumer range MacBook Air, and is available in 13- and 15-inch screen sizes. A 17-inch version was available between April 2006 and June 2012.
The first generation MacBook Pro carries over the design of the PowerBook G4, but uses Intel Core processors instead of PowerPC G4 chips, adds a webcam, and introduced the MagSafe power connector. The 15-inch model was introduced first, in January 2006. A 17-inch model followed in April. Later revisions added Core 2 Duo processors and LED-backlit displays.
The second generation, known as the "unibody" model, debuted in October 2008 in 13- and 15-inch screen sizes. It has a casing made from a single piece of aluminum, a thinner flush display, a redesigned trackpad with the entire surface acting as a clickable button, and a redesigned keyboard. In January 2009 a 17-inch model was released. Subsequent updates brought Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduced Intel's Thunderbolt technology.
The third generation MacBook Pro with a 15-inch screen was released in June 2012. It is thinner than its predecessor, makes solid-state storage standard, and includes a high-resolution Retina display. A 13-inch variant was released in October 2012.
The fourth generation MacBook Pro was released in October 2016. This generation uses USB-C for all data ports and power, and with the exception of the baseline model until 2019, replaced the function keys with an interactive touchscreen strip called the "Touch Bar" with a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.
